Capture Efficiency of Torrent Ducks by the Active Mist-Net Method
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on the use and efficiency of an active mist-net method for capturing 3 subspecies of torrent ducks (Merganetta armata), a territorial and specialized South American waterfowl, in fast-moving rivers of the AndesMountains. As an active process, the execution of this methodology required the presence of a well-trained, 3-person team. During the austral winter and spring between 2010 and 2014, we captured 372 torrent ducks in 410 capture events on 8 different rivers in Colombia (n1⁄4 1), Peru (n1⁄4 5), and Argentina (n1⁄4 2). Each captured torrent duck was banded and 38 opportunistic recaptures events were obtained using the same methodology in the same territories. We deployed the mist nets across fast-moving deep rivers, along elevational gradients (680–4,200m). Males were more easily captured than females, because of their greater tendency to fly. Our data validated this capture method for torrent ducks, as we succeeded in capturing individuals of the 3 subspecies in different habitats at different elevations and latitudes. To avoid animal mortality, we recommend application of this method only when 3minimal conditions are met: 1) each field crew has 3 people; 2) all of the crew members have hand-radios to enable continuous communication; and 3) each crewmember has received prior training (e.g., installation, inspection, manipulation, and removal of the mist net, bird extraction, and familiarity with the behavior of the torrent ducks). 2017 TheWildlife Society.

The Use of Mist-net Capture Rates to Monitor Annual Variation in Abundance: a Validation Study’
Constant-effort mist-netting has become an increasingly popular tool in longterm monitoring of bird populations. Monitoring programs often assume that variation in the capture rates of adults reflects variation in breeding densities of the sampled population. We test this assumption by comparing annual variation in mist-net capture rates to known variation in breeding densities of four species ...
متن کاملOptimizing Sampling Design to Deal with Mist-Net Avoidance in Amazonian Birds and Bats
Mist netting is a widely used technique to sample bird and bat assemblages. However, captures often decline with time because animals learn and avoid the locations of nets. This avoidance or net shyness can substantially decrease sampling efficiency. We quantified the day-to-day decline in captures of Amazonian birds and bats with mist nets set at the same location for four consecutive days. We...
متن کاملTechniques and Technology Mist Net Effort Required to Inventory a Forest Bat Species Assemblage
Little quantitative information exists about the survey effort necessary to inventory temperate bat species assemblages. We used a bootstrap resampling algorithm to estimate the number of mist net surveys required to capture individuals from 9 species at both study area and site levels using data collected in a forested watershed in northwestern California, USA, during 1996–2000. The mean numbe...

DENSITY: software for analysing capture–recapture data from passive detector arrays.— A general computer–intensive method is described for fitting spatial detection functions to capture–recapture data from arrays of passive detectors such as live traps and mist nets. The method is used to estimate the population density of 10 species of breeding birds sampled by mist–netting in deciduous forest...
